"Henry Croft was an orphan street sweeper in London, who in the 19th century began collecting money for charity (predominately for hospitals within the community), in part because a few charities had helped him as an orphan. At the time, street traders wore pants that were decorated with mother of pearl buttons to draw attention to themselves (Abalone create nacre, also known as mother of pearl, on the inside of their shell. It is this mother of pearl that you see on this buckle). Henry Croft decided to go one step further and wore a suit entirely covered in mother of pearl buttons. He became famous, and was known as the Pearly King. Croft died in 1930, over 400 people attended the funeral, and it was covered in the national news.
I mention this story for a few reasons, one because it is a remarkable success story, and we here at Johnson & Held love remarkable success stories. It also captures Croft?s commitment and dedication to his community. His example is one reason we feel so strongly about keeping our manufacturing local and buying all of our supplies from the United States. Third, I like to think this is a buckle that Henry Croft would not only approve of, but also wear. This buckle captures attention: the iridescent mother of pearl changes color before your eyes and you can?t help but stare. I am not suggesting that if you wear this buckle you need to take advantage of all the attention you will get to raise money for charity, but I have heard of worse ideas.
As is the case with all of our buckles, the metal is hand cut here in our Colorado shop, the abalone shell is hand cut to fit each opening, and our craftsmen place each piece into place with tweezers." (Johnson & Held)
