The Frye Company

The Frye Company is the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United States.  Founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England, and family-run until 1945, The Frye Company has produced footwear over a long and illustrious history.  During the mid and late 1800's when adventurous New England families pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and headed West to the New World, they were  wearing Frye boots for the long journey.  Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the American Cavalry.  In 1938, during a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided his difficulty in finding the Wellington boots he liked so much.  As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair.  By mail order, Frye continued to fill requests for these Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet boots, to thousands of servicemen through World War II.  Frye harness boots traveled the world on the feet of American soldiers during the war. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a treasured place in American culture, and has been featured in fashion magazines all over the world.

In the 1960s, Frye re-introduced the Campus Boot.  Based on its 1860's original, the style featured a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes."  In its search for items to best represent America during the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye boots.
